A new entry, from Justyna Surowiec:

Immigration is the prominent issue of our times because it is impacted and altered by every shift occurring in the global arena. Increases in intrastate conflict will produce asylum seekers from all over the world looking for safety and an escape from the humanitarian disasters occurring in their countries. Global climate change will produce climate refugees looking for permanent places to settle. Further, inefficient and unsustainable economic and market policies will result in more migrants foraging the globe, especially the Western world, for jobs.

How are America and other countries prepared to address or contend with these masses, while minimizing and still paying heed to security threats? How can international law and global covenants be used to protect these individuals? Presently, these are unanswered questions in a time when our policy is to address terrorism and while simultaneously increasing xenophobia, rather than attempting to minimize humanitarian plight. Currently, the Department of Homeland Security is bombarded with visa queues that are denied, asylum seekers are told to find someone else’s land to litter, and immigrants seeking sustenance for families are denied with a heavy stamp. Those lucky enough to make it here are often humiliated within our judicial system and then deported. These issues suggest a significant need for immigration reform and overhaul. If these problems and inequalities are not addressed, they will cause population crises that will far surpass issues of global climate change and economic stability, while further exacerbating humanitarian afflictions and national security threats.

Newsweek recently published an article about Lewiston, Maine, a town that once had high job losses and heavy out-migration. But now, things have turned around thanks to an unlikely source – an influx of Somali immigrants. “Increasingly, there’s an acceptance that immigration is associated with good economic growth,” says urban-studies specialist Richard Florida, director of the University of Toronto’s Martin Prosperity Institute – as the article notes. The Somali migrants have certainly had this effect on the town transforming businesses, universities, and in general energizing once-crime-ridden communities with an “infusion of culture and youth.”

Certainly an article worth reading:
